I’m not really sure when it started.
The very first favorite color I ever had, was red. I’m pretty sure it was my favorite because it was also my mom’s favorite.
The next favorite color was yellow. I don’t know exactly when I decided on it, but I know it had something to do with Beauty and the Beast. Bell’s dress at the end of that movie was simply the most beautiful dress I couldn’t imagine on my own. Yellow was my standing favorite for a long time. Every time I signed my signature on something important, like a picture of a girl on a horse to give Mama for the fridge, I did it in yellow. When I got a new notebook to write my spelling words in I always looked for a yellow one. And or when someone offered me any little trinket to decorate during arts and crafts time at Bible School or Church Camp I always chose the yellow one, or found some yellow paint to decorate it with. I was very loyal to the color.
But then I started Pre-Algebra.
My mom picked out my new spiral bound for me because I couldn’t go to Wal-Mart with her that day. The notebook was one of those big Five Star notebooks with 500 pages and golden Manila divider pockets. And it was green.
I liked the look of it as soon as I saw it. Who wouldn’t be attracted to a beautiful stack of clean, un crumpled, college rule held together with a consistent silver spiral? And it was the most beautiful shade of green I ever saw on a notebook. Normally you see the that generic shade of dark green on those flimsy 70 page deals you get for 20 pennies at the beginning of school season. But this was a nice, green-brown-yellow shade.
That notebook cover made me fall in love with the color green.
I spent many mornings with that notebook, and some late evenings. I opened it every weekday to work my math problems and list the answers. One day I put a sticker on the corner. It had the rat Remi from Ratatouille, and it said “You are Special” and it’s stuck there to this day. Eventually, I fielded it up with numbers. Then I had to get a new notebook.
I didn’t stop loving green though. I’ve slowly collected many green things over the years: I bought the green skirt, the green scarf, the green sports chair, the green phone case, the green backpack, and I wrote a website with a green theme…
Today, I still love green but I’ve also come to love so many other color combinations. I have a Pintrest board dedicated to colors. And then there’s my most recent discovery in the exploration of colors: Adobe Color. I love to see all of the different ones spread out in front of me.
